Spring has arrived and it is accompanied by warm weather and dry, hot conditions in most regions of California. The encounters of humans with snakes are expected as these evasive animals become very active during this period of the year. Majority of the native snakes are not harmful.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) urges the prevention of the rattlesnake, a venomous species, and having knowledge of the action to take in the rare incident of a bite. Rattlesnakes may be discovered in various habitats, from coastal to desert, and are common in California.
Spring is here and with it brings warm weather and hot, dry conditions in many areas of the Eastern Sierra. California. Encounters with snakes are more likely as these elusive animals become more active this time of year.
Rattlesnakes may be found in diverse habitats, They can be attracted to areas around homes with heavy brush or vegetation, under wood piles where rodents may hide, as well as well-manicured landscapes to bask in the sun.
Rattlesnakes are not generally aggressive, unless provoked or threatened, and will likely retreat if given space.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Rattlesnake season has officially arrived in Santa Barbara County and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife is advising residents on what to do if they encounter one while hiking or near their home.
“Snakes are often misunderstood. They provide significant ecosystem benefits, such as rodent control, and are an important part of California’s unique biodiversity,” said CDFW’s Conflict Programs Coordinator Vicky Monroe.
The department said most native snakes to the state are harmless, however, rattlesnakes are a venomous species and should be avoided at all times.
Officials state that rattlesnakes can be found on both the coast and desert areas of California. They are often attracted to areas around homes with heavy brush, under wood piles where rodents can hide and even well-manicured landscapes where they can bask in the sun.
