GRANADA HILLS, Calif., April 29, 2021 /PRNewswire/ Granada Hills Charter (GHC) has been named a 2021 California Distinguished School based on its outstanding student outcomes, including high-level performances in English Language Arts and math and its excellent graduation rate and the preparedness of students to succeed in college. Although the past year has been a difficult one, our teachers and staff have maintained a focus on providing our students the highest-quality education, one that challenges and inspires them, said Brian Bauer, GHC s Executive Director. We are fortunate to have educators who are creative and innovative, and a support structure to foster them as we all work towards one purpose: serving our students and preparing them for success in their lives.

Oak Park and Rancho Campana high schools were added to the 2021 California Distinguished Schools list announced Wednesday.
The list, originally put out by the state Department of Education in March with 102 schools, was updated with an additional 121 schools, including the two Ventura County schools.
The schools are named based on performance and progress on state indicators specified on the California School Dashboard, a statement from state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond says. The Distinguished Schools program is meant to recognize schools primarily for closing the achievement gap and/or achieving exceptional student performance.
Oak Park High, in the Oak Park Unified School District, and Rancho Campana High in Camarillo, part of Oxnard Union High School District, are the only schools from the county on the list this year.
Last March, when school buildings closed as the pandemic spread, I wrote a commentary about what I felt was most important in distance learning: connecting with my students.
During our remote school experience this school year, I’ve met my students’ siblings and pets, seen favorite stuffed animals and Lego creations, and even been treated to a piano performance. Despite the physical distance, my students managed to come together as a community of unique individuals. It is essential as we are returning to in-person instruction that we build on that sense of community to create an affirming school climate. A positive learning environment is essential for re-engaging our students and meeting the needs of the whole child as the pandemic recedes.
