California cuts the number of exams required to earn teaching credential

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - California s newly approved state budget allows teacher candidates to skip two of the tests that had been required to earn a teaching credential if they take approved coursework.
Teacher candidates no longer have to take the California Basic Skills Test, or CBEST, or the California Subject Matter Exams for Teachers, referred to as CSET to earn a credential.
The CBEST tests reading, math and writing skills and is usually taken before a student is accepted into a teacher preparation program. The CSET tests a teacher candidate s proficiency in the subject they will teach. Teacher candidates must prove subject-matter proficiency before earning a credential, but many teacher preparation programs r

Asian Americans cheered the July 12 passage of Californiaâs API Equity Budget, a three-year $156 million initiative which seeks to equip the AAPI community with resources to combat hate crimes.
âThis is historic and unprecedented. It is the outcome of many community-based organizations who rallied to get this support to find the best ways we can respond to violence against our community, and to prevent these attacks from occurring in the first place,â said Cynthia Choi, co-executive director of Chinese for Affirmative Action.
âThe AAPI community has historically been overlooked and underfunded. Imagine what we can do with resources,â she said, adding that the investment in the community must be ongoing, beyond the initial three-year commitment.
