California Looking To Do Away With Gas Appliances

California Capitol Sacramento, CA The State of California’s Energy Commission is drafting new rules that would impact home construction. The commission has released draft building standards that would require all newly constructed residences to be equipped with circuits and panels allowing for electric appliances for heating, cooking, and drying. It would not forbid gas hookups, but it would be cost-ineffective to include the mandatory electrical infrastructure, in addition to gas.  The agency reports that it is part of a statewide effort to eliminate fossil fuels. If adopted, it would take effect on January 1, 2023. Report breaking news, traffic or weather to our News Hotline 532-6397. Send Mother Lode News Story photos to news@clarkebroadcasting.com. Newsom Looks to Expand Stimulus Checks as Golden State Revels in Extra Cash

The California Capitol building. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CN) California is so flush with cash thanks to overperforming tax collections and billions in federal Covid-19 aid, state officials are on the verge of doing the unthinkable: returning money to taxpayers and helping pay their bills. Locked in budget negotiations with lawmakers while simultaneously fighting to keep his job, Governor Gavin Newsom on Monday proposed $600 stimulus checks for most California taxpayers in what he calls the “biggest state tax rebate in American history.” To go along with direct cash payments, Newsom said the state should take advantage of an estimated $75 billion budget surplus by covering billions of unpaid rent and utility bills.

Gavin Newsom Recall Update

Of the near 1.5 million signatures needed to trigger the gubernatorial recall of Gavin Newsom, over 1.6 million have been verified as of last week. The signatures have been sent back to the 58 counties from the California Secretary of State, who now have 30 days to reconfigure their respective counts if any signatories wish to retract their decision. After this 30-day period, signatures are resubmitted to the state. Barring the event that enough people retract their signatures to invalidate the recall, the effort to put it on the ballot will continue. The California Department of Finance and California Secretary of State will then present a cost estimate for the recall to the Joint Legislative Budget Committee, the Governor, the Lt. Governor and the California Secretary of State. This body has 30 days to review the estimate.
