From Natural Rights to Human Rights—And Beyond

Summary The idea of rights is central to our moral vocabulary. Over the past century, however, the concept of rights has changed significantly: the original faculties-based natural rights doctrine is being replaced by a needs-based and dependency-based human rights doctrine. This change is best represented in the sharp contrast between rights claims expressed in the Declaration of Independence and the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights. This shift in theory has and will continue to have broad practical consequences. The human rights view, in understanding human beings as needy and dependent rather than as distinctively capable of responsible liberty, leads to the endless proliferation of rights claims, which become self-negating. In a situation where everyone has a right to everything, there can be no justice. 10 must-see films directed by Latin American women

From north to south, from east to west, regardless of their country of origin, women in the film world continue to take firm steps that have led to international success and recognition. And we are not only talking about actresses or producers but more specifically about directors, those who take the lead in a project to bring it to life with their visionary magic. The Grigoryans’ music and the objects themselves are being showcased by ABC Classic across the radio and online, as well as on a new album.  The project was distinctively ‘2020’, with Slava and Leonard separated by state border closures while they were writing the music.

When I found out about my grandfather’s passing in primary school, all the dreams I had of meeting him were shattered. There was a dry and tightening feeling in my throat. I felt guilty for crying. I never got to meet him. My first foreign heartbreak. My parents always talked about us going back home to Ghana to meet the family. It was a dream for me because the white and third generation ethnic kids at school would talk about what their nans and pops got them for Christmas. I couldn’t wait to meet mine, so that each time another kid had a story to tell about their grandparents, I could have one of my own to share.
