Maine officially became a state on March 15, 1820.The time capsule named the Dirigo Star, was custom made at the University of Maine s Advanced Structures and Composites Center in Orono using a 3D printer. Modeled after the North Star used in navigation, the Dirigo Star will rest on a pedestal built by Maine Heritage Timber using reclaimed wood from the Penobscot River. Ferrini-Mundy celebrates Maine statehood, discusses time capsule on The Maine Take Joan Ferrini-Mundy, University of Maine System vice chancellor for research and innovation and president of the University of Maine and the University of Maine Machias, joined The Maine Take with Dana Connors to discuss the production and presentation of the Dirigo Star to the chair of Maine’s Bicentennial Commission, Sen. Bill Diamond. The star, which was 3-D printed at UMaine’s Advanced Structures and Composites Center, will be the centerpiece of a time capsule display at the Maine State Library in Augusta. The time capsule will be sealed this fall and opened on the state’s tricentennial in 2120.
