Disorder in Northern Ireland for Second Night Amid Brexit Tensions
Cars were set alight and masked people pelted a police van with petrol bombs on Saturday on the second successive evening of disorder in pro-British parts of Northern Ireland amid rising post-Brexit tensions in the region.
Many pro-British unionists fiercely oppose the new trade barriers introduced between Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom as part of Britain’s departure from the EU and have warned that their unease could lead to violence.
Political leaders, including Britain’s Northern Ireland minister, had appealed for calm earlier on Saturday but police said they were attending reports of disorder in Newtownabbey on the northern outskirts of Belfast.
Northern Ireland officials condemned violence on Saturday after fifteen police officers were injured in clashes with loyalist protesters in Belfast.
A small local protest in the loyalist area of Sandy Row, south Belfast, quickly developed into an attack on police on Friday, police said in a statement.
The officers were subjected to a sustained attack by rioters who have thrown a number of objects at police, including heavy masonry, metal rods, fireworks and manhole covers, said Belfast District Commander Chief Superintendent Simon Walls. Their injuries include burns, head and leg injuries, Walls went on.
Eight people have been arrested, police said, including children as young as 13 and 14.

Two military-owned shopping malls in Yangon one downtown and another in the northern part of the city burned down early on Thursday morning. Photos that went viral online show the charred remains of Ruby Mart in the city center, burned beyond recognition. The Gandamar Wholesale center in Mayangone Township was seriously damaged in a separate blaze that was still smoldering after sunrise.

So far, the causes of the fires remain unknown, as does the extent of the financial losses.
Florida House approves draconian HB 1 anti-protest bill
Last Friday, Florida’s Republican-controlled House of Representatives passed the controversial HB 1 Combating Violence, Disorder, and Looting and Law Enforcement Protection Act, a draconian piece of legislation that gives the state greater power to suppress “unlawful assemblies” and maintain funding for law enforcement.

Now that the House has passed HB 1, the Florida Senate will have to pass a similar bill before it reaches the desk of Governor DeSantis. The Senate is also dominated by Republicans, who currently hold 24 of its 40 seats, but it has yet to give the bill a hearing in committee.
