(KERO) â After three children died from accidental drowning in 2020, Kern County Public Health is urging residents to use caution around large bodies of water.
With temperatures rising, public health is asking residents to learn proper water safety. While water can be fun for kids and a great way to escape the heat, it can also pose serious dangers.
Safe Kids International reports that drowning is the third leading cause of death among children 19 and under. According to the Kern County Child Death Review Team, in 2020, three children died from accidental drowning. Since 2014, 35 Kern County children to accidental drowning. â

Kern County remaining in orange tier, could move into yellow tier as early as May 26

(KERO) â Kern County Public Health announced the county will remain in the orange tier for at least the next two weeks.
According to public health, Kern County is meeting two out of the three metrics to move into the less restrictive yellow tier. Kern has an adjusted case rate of 3.4 per 100,000 residents, a testing positivity rate of 1.7% and a health equity quartile testing positivity rate of 1.9%. In order to move into the yellow tier, Kern needs to have an adjusted case rate below 2 and a testing positivity and health equity quartile testing positivity rate below 2%.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif â According to the Kern County Public Health Department, since the county has gained access to the COVID-19 vaccines, they have seen a steady increase in the community-making vaccine appointments. But, over the past few weeks, they have seen a significant dip with more people becoming hesitant about the vaccine.
âWe did see, ironically at the same time that there was a pause of the J&J vaccine, we did experience at the same time, a slowing of appointments,â Michelle Corson, Public Relations Officer with Kern County Public Health, said.
