Bakersfield High School math teacher adds lightboards to the virtual learning equation

It was over the summer of 2020 following what Bakersfield High School math teacher, Tamara Clark called the âcrisis mode of educationâ that the
LightUp Education Lightboard came to be. The board has allowed Clark to take applied algebra lessons directly from the agenda to the see-through board, so that students can see the equations and Clark at the same time.
âAs a lifelong educator, itâs imperative to me that we connect with these kids,â Clark said.
Clark saw something similar on YouTube, but found models online to be too expensive. So, her husband, Bakersfield Fire Department Battalion Chief, A.J. Clark got to work and built his own version.
KHSD looking to bring back students as early as March, waiting on state approval

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KERO) â The Kern High School District is working on a plan to bring some students back to campus as early as the first week of March.
During a special board of trustees meeting held Wednesday, Superintendent Dr. Bryon Schaefer discussed the district s Safe Schools for All Safety Review, which if approved by the state will layout how students could return to campus.
If the state approves the plan, the board discussed bringing back students with disabilities and English learners. Students that are considered at risk/high-need will also be brought back, including foster/homeless youth and CTEC/ROC.
KHSD slated to receive $101 million from the state and federal governments
The Kern High School District is set to receive $101 million dollars in CARES funding in total from the state and federal governments. 23ABCâs Kristin Vartan has the details on where that money is going.

The Kern High School District is not only the largest school district in Kern County, but the largest high school district in the state, with 40,000 students.
Thatâs why the $101 million in CARES funds theyâre slated to receive from the state and federal governments combined, KHSD trustee Jeff Flores said, matter.

When the coronavirus pandemic forced schools across the country to close last spring, many district leaders were gripped with anxiety because their teachers weren’t ready to pivot to remote learning.
But not Panama-Buena Vista Union, a K-8 district of about 18,000 students in Bakersfield, Calif., in the Central Valley, about 155 miles north of Los Angeles.
And not Jason Hodgson, the school system’s director of professional development, who had spent the last two years laying the groundwork for that moment even though he didn’t know it at the time.
