ELIZABETHTON â Cleanup continues on Browns Branch Road in the Roan Mountain area several weeks after a storm blew through the community.
âIt will take a while longer to clear the storm damage,â Carter County Highway Superintendent Roger Colbaugh told the Carter County Commissionâs Highway Committee on Thursday. He said later the clean up will probably take another couple of weeks.
Colbaugh talked with the Johnson City Press about the cleanup effort following the meeting. He said work crews using the large 24-ton capacity dump trucks have cleared and hauled to the landfill about 12 to 13 truckloads. But the debris is only part of the storm damage that has been removed. Colbaugh said larger limbs were run through chippers and the chips have been given to any property owners who want it. Colbaugh said the chips have proven to be a popular commodity, and the Highway Department hasnât had to haul the chips away or fill the landfill with the residue.
The Appalachian Trail stretches over 2,200 miles from Georgia to Maine. In the Tri-Cities area, volunteers of the Tennessee Eastman Hiking and Canoeing club maintain 134 miles of trail from Spivey Gap (near Erwin) to the Tennessee/Virginia border just outside of Damascus.
Many thru-hikers, section-hikers and trail veterans consider several sites along these 134 miles as some of the most picturesque in the entire length of this famed path.
With summer rolling in, itâs time to head to the cooler temperatures of the higher elevations and experience these amazing vistas. We have multiple access spots along the trail within a short drive from the Tri-Cities, ranging from easy to difficult treks.
ELIZABETHTON â A new organization is being set up in Carter County and Elizabethton to provide a one-stop resource center to meet the needs of the homeless population in the region.
The Carter Compassion Center received confirmation from the Internal Revenue Service last week that its 501 ( c ) 3 designation had been approved.
It was the latest step forward for a group that formed during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic but which has still managed to maintain momentum in meeting its mission of ministering to the homeless.
It got its start a couple of years ago with an aim of the Health and Welfare Committee of the Carter County Commission to establish a joint task force of city and county groups to deal with the local homeless problem.

ROAN MOUNTAIN â With the Rhododendron Festival just days away, both lanes of the highway leading to the Cloudland Gardens are open, but the plants in the garden arenât quite ready to bloom.
A work crew did its part on Tuesday morning, finishing the patching job on the highway from Carvers Gap to the Cloudland Gardens. The crew finished up by lunchtime, collected the traffic warning signs and departed. Long strips of still-hot asphalt lined a long section of the eastern side of the road.
Traffic was heavy on the road during the morning, and flagman had to be deployed to alternate traffic on the single open lane. During the afternoon, traffic was able to negotiate both lanes along the entire road.
