Mount Laurel s new Democratic-led council unveils plans for township

And now, they say, they plan to use that political capital. On Jan. 1, newly elected council members Karen Cohen, Fozia Janjua and Nick Moustakas joined Stephen Steglik and Kareem Pritchett, the Democrats who first took office in 2019. In early February, the group teamed with Democratic state Assemblywoman Carol Murphy, who lives in the township, to release a transition report outlining the party s plan for the future of Mount Laurel.  The Democrats first big initiative is to create a public affairs department to engage with the township s 40,000-plus residents. Beyond that, the council wants to strengthen internet connectivity, enact a series of road projects to ease traffic congestion and transform the Rancocas Woods area into a main street.

Assemblywoman Murphy pays it back with socks drive for the homeless

Her memory is long. And appreciative. Many years before Democrat Carol Murphy was elected to the New Jersey General Assembly from the 7th District, times were hard. Her father, an Army veteran and Bronze Star recipient, died of Agent Orange exposure when she was a teen. She worked two and three jobs to pay her way through college. When she was short on cash during those lean years, friends were there,  helping with her rent or simply buying lunch.  Lessons from her dad’s service to America and friends’ emotional and monetary support made a lasting impression.   As Murphy recently collected and distributed more than 1,500 pairs of new socks to agencies and organizations that help and house the nearly 600 homeless folks in Burlington County,  it was clear the project was more passion than politics.
