Helping youngsters get to grips with science
Caroline Brown and Naomi Pulfrey, of BAE Systems
Two Barrow-based engineers are celebrating after thousands took advantage of a series of activities they devised for children aimed at demystifying science, engineering, technology, art and maths.
Caroline Brown and Naomi Pulfrey developed the project, which has taken off in schools around Barrow over the last two years, after joining BAE Systems as graduates.
When the pandemic began school visits were cancelled but, undeterred, the pair passed their material onto a free website to host the easy to follow lessons.
“We originally set up the activities for after school clubs to help non science specialists teach the subjects but still bring interest and enjoyment,” Naomi said.

“The Call from Algeria: Third Worldism, Revolution and the Turn to Islam” was published in 1996. Robert Malley’s book remains one of the best ever written on modern Algeria, but also essential reading to anyone following Middle East and North Africa politics and the extrapolation of the old “North-South” struggle into the “New World Disorder.” As an interpretation of Algeria’s past and present agonies, the book is set against the broader backdrop of the rise and fall of Third Worldism and remains as pertinent today as it was twenty-five years ago.

Out of Hounds by Rita Mae Brown (Adult Fiction). Spring is peeking through the frost in Virginia, and though the hunting season is coming to a close, the foxes seem determined to put the members of the Jefferson Hunt Club through their paces. Sister and her friends are enjoying some of the best chases they’ve had all season when the fun is cut short by the theft of Crawford Howard’s treasured Sir Alfred Munnings painting of a woman in hunting attire riding sidesaddle. When another painting goes missing five days later, also a Munnings, also of a woman hunting sidesaddle, Sister Jane knows it’s no coincidence.
