The security of Macon’s status as “Cherry Blossom Capital of the World” could rest in Wayne Woodworth’s backyard.
On his tiny patch of the Providence neighborhood, Woodworth is trying to grow a better cherry tree.
The Yoshino, which is the star of the Macon-Bibb County’s annual signature festival, struggles in the hot Southern climate and has become susceptible to disease. Plus, the 20-year life expectancy is about up for many trees already in decline around town. Grafting can triple the lifespan in some climates, he’s learned.
MACON, Georgia(41NBC/WMGT)- Many organizations came together Friday, to sponsor an emergency vegan food pantry.
Cars lined up at Carolyn Crayton Park before the event began.
Between 30-40 bags were given out, which included spaghetti, coconut milk and more plant based items.
Jena Newman is a vegan. Newman said she wants to take every opportunity to give back.
“It’s amazing I mean I think it’s great that you know these bags are accessible to people that might not be able to go to regular food pantry,” said Newman.
A separate group came to get food for senior residents who prefer to eat plant based items.

MACON, Ga. After it was canceled in 2020, the Cherry Blossom Festival is on for 2021. The Pinkest Party on Earth is set to kick off in less than a month, but with some changes.
All in-person events will be outside, and some will move online, including the parade.
Instead of watching the parade shoulder-to-shoulder on the sidewalks, this year, you ll have to enjoy it from your couch.
Stacy Moore, president of the Cherry Blossom Festival, says the parade as well as the Wiener Dog Race and the Bed Race will be livestreamed online this year.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – With early voting beginning Monday, there are three polls now open in Bibb county.
There were reports of long lines at each location. The line at the Board of Elections Office wrapped around the building.
Board of Elections Chairman, Mike Kaplan, reported one issue when polls opened this morning.
Kaplan says the printers were not functioning properly at the Elaine Lucas Senior Center. He says voters waited for about 30 extra minutes before the issue was resolved.
But Kaplan says he wants voters to feel confident that their vote counts.
