Wellington's Johnsonville to Makara road needs $1.5 million in repairs

15:50, Jul 27 2021 SUPPLIED/Stuff Sections of Takarau Gorge Rd in Wellington have been undermined and at least two culverts under the road will have to be replaced. Flooding earlier this month damaged Takarau Gorge Rd so badly it will require around $1.5million in repairs. The Wellington City Council said the road linking Johnsonville and Makara Beach would remain closed to traffic for several weeks while extensive damage from the flood on July 17 was fixed. The council’s transport and infrastructure manager Brad Singh said several hundred metres of the road were “torn up and pretty much wrecked” after the Ohariu Stream became a raging torrent through the narrow gorge.

New Bike Racks Help Meet Growing Demand

Tuesday, 20 July 2021, 10:28 am Just over 50 new bike racks and six cycle repair stands are being installed around the central city and suburbs during the next few months to help meet growing demand. This work is part of improving facilities and infrastructure to make cycling easier and more convenient, encourage more people to make more trips by bike, and help reduce emissions from road transport. Wellington Mayor Andy Foster says the most significant thing we can personally do to make a difference is to change the way we move by reducing car trips and getting to more places on foot, by bike, bus or train.
