Philippines fully restores U S troops pact it had threatened to scrap

By Reuters Staff 1 Min Read MANILA (Reuters) - The Philippines has fully restored a crucial agreement governing the U.S. troop presence in the country, the Southeast Asian nation’s defence minister Delfin Lorenzana said on Friday. The announcement, which was made during a visit by U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, marks a reversal after President Rodrigo Duterte had told Washington last year he was cancelling the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) signed in 1998. The Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) provides rules for the rotation of thousands of U.S. troops in and out of the Philippines for war drills and exercises. It has assumed additional importance as the United States and its allies contend with an increasingly assertive China.

Vaccinate anyone who wants a COVID shot, says Philippines Duterte

By Syndicated Content Jul 28, 2021 | 2:09 PM MANILA (Reuters) – Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte ordered his government on Wednesday to open the coronavirus vaccination campaign to anyone who wants a shot as his country scrambles to protect the population from more transmissible variants. With only 6% of the Philippines’ 110 million people fully vaccinated against COVID-19, millions remain vulnerable to infection. The government is aiming to fully immunise up to 70 million people before the year ends. “Give the vaccines to those who want to be vaccinated,” Duterte said in a late-night address, expressing concern over the contagious Delta variant, which is ripping through Southeast Asia, now a global epicentre for the virus.
