Reading playground revamp: How to have YOUR say on designs

Park Existing playground at Blagrave The new play areas will include a mix of play equipment which is accessible to all abilities. A public consultation will be starting today (Wednesday, January 13) and will last until February 3. Proposal One of the submitted proposals Cllr Karen Rowland, Reading’s Lead Member for Culture, Heritage and Recreation, said: “It is one of our key priorities that we provide high quality, accessible equipment in as many of our playgrounds as possible so that children of all abilities can play together. “I’m delighted that we are able to put such a significant sum into Blagrave Recreation Ground. Understanding what our children want in terms of play spaces just makes common sense, and I’m really pleased we’ve been able to ensure this by engaging the local community in viewing, discussing and voting for their favourite designs, as well as consulting with Reading’s Access and Disabilities Working Group.

Reading s Twilight Trail sells 10,000 tickets as visitors enjoy light show

The Twilight Trail has been designed to be as inclusive as possible throughout its run – including wheelchair-accessible alternative routes wherever needed and bowls of water and treats for assistance dogs – but this Monday sees a relaxed version of the experience for all 14 bookable slots, between 4-8.40pm. Specially tailored to a neuro-diverse audience, the brightness of the lights and volume of the sounds will be lowered and hearing loops provided for the audio installations from local theatre companies, Reading Rep and Rabble. The already-distanced capacity will be reduced further in each slot and a Trail pack and video will be sent to ticket-holders in advance.

Reading residents invited to vote on Cintra Park playground designs

It will also see the addition of equipment such as an accessible roundabout, a see-saw and slide. The surfacing of and access into the playground will also be improved. The council invited several leading specialist companies to put forward their designs for the refurbishment of the playground. The council received three submissions from bidders, which have all been shortlisted for public consultation. The shortlisted designs will be displayed as part of an online-only public consultation of residents and children in the surrounding area, running between December 14, 2020, and January 6, 2021, at www.reading.gov.uk/cintra-park. The proposed designs will be displayed at schools and nurseries in the local area for children to see, encouraging them to vote for their favourite.
