In 2019, the Perry County Prison ended a five-year policy meant to protect citizens from being unconstitutionally detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), in part because county officials didn’t like the designation of “sanctuary county.”
Being off that sanctuary list is more than just optics, county officials said, and the change won’t affect the due diligence the prison uses when it honors an ICE detainer.
