UVic s year of COVID-19 –

How the university responded to the pandemic For the majority of the 2020-2021 academic year, the UVic campus was essentially deserted slackliners were absent from the quad, there was never a queue at BiblioCafé, residence parties were prohibited, and classrooms and offices were mostly dark and empty. The normal crowds of thousands of Blundstone-wearing and Patagonia-sporting students were nowhere to be seen.  After a year of online school, UVic has announced that the university is preparing to return to in-person learning once again in the fall.  As students return to campus, questions remain about how UVic will respond to the pandemic. Although the future is debatably more uncertain than ever, UVic’s response to COVID-19 over the past year can give the university community some indication of where we might be heading.

East Brunswick s Lost Souls Memorial Project monument will be built at community center

EAST BRUNSWICK–The Lost Souls Memorial Project Inc. released a Request for Proposal (RFP) to launch the design phase of its history-restoring monument. Founded in 2017, the Lost Souls Public Memorial Project is a grassroots, community-based effort to remember 177-plus African Americans whose freedom was stolen by a corrupt Middlesex County judge, Jacob Van Wickle, in 1818. The project would build a memorial at the East Brunswick Community Arts Center, according to the Rev. Karen Johnston of the Unitarian Society of East Brunswick. The juried design chosen will record and welcome back in perpetuity the Lost Souls stolen from the East Brunswick community 203 years ago, according to a prepared statement from the organization.

Internal notice of COVID-19 case on campus leads to students demanding answers –

Frustrated by lack of information, students derail UVic Instagram post about career services Residents of the Sir Arthur Currie (SAC) building received a notice that there was a COVID-19 exposure in their building from March 24-29. The notice did not indicate how many people were infected by COVID-19 or how many people were self isolating. Island Health informed students that they should self-monitor for symptoms and were not considered high risk. “For privacy reasons, we cannot provide any other details on the COVID-19 exposure,” the notice read. “No information specific to the individual or individuals will be released by Island Health.”
