Trump s strength in Sarasota-Manatee, BLM protests among top politics stories

Southwest Florida played a big role in President Donald Trump carrying Florida in 2016, and heading into 2020, the region was viewed as key to another Trump win. But there were questions about whether Trump would be as strong in places such as Sarasota and Manatee counties as he was four years ago after the turmoil of a tumultuous presidency and months of the coronavirus ravaging the state. The election proved that Southwest Florida still is very much Trump country. Trump won Sarasota County by 28,260 votes and Manatee County by 34,821. He carried the two-county region by nearly 5,793 more votes than in 2016 and increased his share of the vote in both counties.

2020: A wild year for Sarasota, Manatee schools

Schools close due to COVID-19 Students left school in Sarasota and Manatee for spring break on the afternoon of March 12 not knowing they wouldn’t return to the classroom until August. As the first wave of COVID-19 cases hit Florida, school districts statewide shut down on March 13. Although the original closures were supposed to be temporary, schools remained shuttered for the duration of the 2019-20 school year. While it may have stemmed the spread of the virus to some extent, the ripple effects of school closures were massive. Leaders in both school districts frantically pieced together remote learning programs, set up food distribution sites for students accustomed to eating breakfast and lunch at school and tried to figure out how to get internet to families in need so students could take classes remotely.
