Blackburn Magistrates Court A MAN caused nearly £3,000 worth of damage to parked cars as he took a short cut home from a drinking session.
Blackburn magistrates heard two of the cars belonged to a man Nicholas Armstrong believed was responsible for an assault on him a number of weeks earlier. But the third car was owned by a totally innocent victim. Armstrong, 47, of Great Bolton Street, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to three charges of criminal damage and breaching a restraining order. He was sentenced to 10 weeks in prison. Laura Peers, prosecuting, said the restraining order, imposed in December, prevented Armstrong from contacting his former partner or going onto the road where she lives.
SCENE: B&M store, Blackburn A MAN caught stealing from a Blackburn store managed to escape from security staff but not the surveillance equipment. Blackburn magistrates heard Joseph Peter McNally was tracked by cameras as he fled from Asda and was filmed going into B&M. And when he tried to steal from that shop he was arrested by police. McNally, 38, of Bolton Road, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to two charges of shop theft. He was given a conditional discharge for 18 months and ordered to pay £85 costs and £22 victim surcharge. Pam Ward, prosecuting, said McNally went into Asda at 6.05pm and put eight Pokemon toys, worth £84, into a bag before going to the till and paying for a newspaper and leaving.
Haibatullah Akhundzada
His one known photo shows him staring calmly at the camera, sporting a crisp white turban and well-groomed beard. Unlike many other Islamic militant leaders, Haibatullah Akhundzada does not favour bloodthirsty videos or swaggering poses with guns.
Yet as Western troops end their 20-year presence in Afghanistan, the image of the publicity-shy Taliban cleric may well become more familiar to the world.
If the group regains its grip on the country, he will be arguably the world’s most powerful Islamic insurgent leader, shaping the future of a land of nearly 40 million people.
Last week, in a hint that he was readying himself for power, he issued a statement saying he wanted a political settlement to the Afghan conflict, despite his own fighters recent bloody onslaught against Afghan forces.
