RAPID CITY/SPEARFISH, S.D. Local college graduates are getting the chance to walk across the stage during commencement this year.
South Dakota Mines will holds its ceremony Saturday morning starting at 9:00 a.m. in the Barnett Arena at the Civic Center.
375 seniors are graduating from the School of Mines.
And in the Northern Hills Saturday morning, about 400 seniors will walk the stage at Black Hills State University.
Commencement will be held at the Donald E. Young Sports and Fitness center.
Due to the pandemic, two commencement ceremonies will be held for the university’s three colleges.

53 teams registered and played through a bracket set up by All-American wrestler, Reese Osborne and Black Hills State bound, Quinton Mangus. Gabe Bland and Sam Gregory ran the bracket and won $100, Provision Fund gear, and other small prizes. The duo defeated math teachers, Lonna Forister and Tim Daniels, for the grand prize. Although, the two did not walk away empty handed. Between them, and the final four, they were able to choose from prizes donated by SHS activities, the “Go Be WYO” Podcast, and Provision Fund to settle the score.
Brennan Keller, Provision Fund Outreach Coordinator, believes the event was a success, achieving its goal to bring young people together. “It was a privilege to see students from all grades and walks of life come together as one student body.” Keller states. “We truly are better, when we come together and contribute hard work. SD Heroes WOD honors fallen first responders, members of military
Black Hills State University s ROTC cadets hosted a workout Saturday morning to honor fallen soldiers and first responders

Two workouts were available for participants, the “Andy” workout and “Davey” partner workout.
The price for registering was $20, which included a t-shirt, with the rest of the proceedings going to the Veterans Club and Spearfish ROTC’s club funds.
Instructors of the ROTC program say that while the program was mainly put together for one class, but it wasn’t just the students that helped out.
“It’s my military science, my sophomores and my freshman organized a lot of it, but all of the Black Hills State University ROTC cadets are here today supporting the event,” said Laura Arnold, ROTC Assistant Professor of Military Science at Black Hills State University.
When the announcement came in late March that Neiman Enterprises, who has been operating in the Black Hills since 1936, was shuttering its Hill City sawmill, it was met with concern not only for the employees that would be losing their jobs but dismay about the future of the timber, logging and wood products industry.
In their announcement, President and CEO Jim Neiman said, “If given the opportunity to purchase timber to keep the mill running, we would have done that. Keeping the Hill City location running would be in the best interest of the forest and communities over the long term. The Hill City location employs 120 people along with 12 contract crews.”
