African American Soul Dancing and Book Signing Featuring Frank R. Ross & Friends This Black Music Month event will showcase the marriage between movement and music in Black history and culture, especially as it relates to dance in the 20th and 21st centuries. The presentation will include accomplished dancers from Baltimore, Cleveland, Detroit, and Chicago as couples will demonstrate dances and performances based on Frank R. Ross's Soul Dancing! The Essential African American Cultural Dance. After the dance demonstrations, Ross will facilitate a Q & A session about the book and talk about offer suggestions for incorporating African-American dance into academic programs. An Ohio native, Ross graduated from Cleveland’s John Adams High School. A dancer, choreographer and retired physical education teacher and guidance counselor, Ross is the creator of the Grand March, the National African-American Folk Dance. He is also the best-selling author of The Grand March –

When We Talk About Black History We Must Include Music Black music is not only a thread in the fabric of African-American history, over time it has shaped many of the pop culture moments we see across societies. Black music is recognized nationally once a year during the month of June, but since the celebration began, the material we include in that category has evolved far beyond its foundation and necessarily so. In 2009, former president Barack Obama renamed Black Music Month created in 1979 by then-president Jimmy Carter African-American Music Appreciation Month in an effort to expand knowledge of and recognition for the contributions of African-Americans across all music genres. As such, the legacy of music in the African-American community is a key part of our history and we can’t talk about one without discussing the other.
