Photos / Sue Emeny Hawkes Bay Today By: Sue Emeny Thirty-one Cactus students graduated from their eight-week course at an emotional ceremony on Saturday at the Dannevirke Services and Citizens Club. Course instructor Wayne Churchouse said the students had worked hard throughout the course, turning up at 5.30am three mornings a week. And as you saw today during the Longest Day challenge, they nailed it. Churchouse said he was experiencing a range of emotions, among them relief that the course was able to be completed - unlike last year s, which had to be stopped a week and a half from the end because of Covid.

Richmond Dales Amateur Swimming Club, based at Richmond Swimming Pool, has launched its 10k for 10k appeal this week. Sarah Johnson, fundraising secretary for the club, said: At the point of the first lockdown our swimming squads were just preparing for our April Fools gala, which raises vital funds every year for the club, and ensures that swim fees are kept at an accessible level. We also subsequently had to cancel a further two main fundraising swimming competitions, and in total have lost more than £20,000 in revenue this year due to the cancellation of these events.

Over 170 athletes from around the country competed in the event, in a variety of solo, duet and team performances. Artistic swimming, formerly known as synchronised swimming, is a mixture of swimming, gymnastics and dance performed in the water. On the podium there were plenty of smiles for the Baywave-based club. Advertisement The biggest upset came from their Hector s Dolphins team, comprising Grace Fish, Grace Reid, Estella Sylvester, Jasmine Riley, Sophie Winters and Greta Nemedi, who won gold in the hard-fought beginner Dolphin category.
