Tri-Valley youth led a virtual community forum last week to discuss police presence on local school campuses and the future role of school resource officers (SROs).
The evening conversation on July 22 was organized by members of Genesis of the Tri-Valley, a community group focused on impacting structural racism through issue-based campaigns. They aim to end the school-to-prison pipeline, put a stop to youth incarceration completely and find alternate methods for when a student is having a mental health crisis. Pauline Petersen, a junior at Lakeridge High School, has received a prestigious award from the National Center for Women in Information Technology.
The National Center for Women in Information Technology has honored a local student with its National Aspirations in Computing Award.
Pauline Petersen, a junior at Lakeridge High School, was selected as a national award recipient by the NCWIT she is one of 400 out of more than 4,000 applicants.
Petersen is also a regional winner for Oregon and Southwest Washington.
Award recipients are selected based on demonstrated interest and achievements in computing, leadership skills, academic performance and future college plans in the field, according to a news release.

NJ students: SCVTHS students earn medals in championships

Throughout the month of April, Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School (SCVTHS) students competed against other career and technical education students from around the state, in both virtual and in-person events, as part of the 2021 New Jersey SkillsUSA Championships. Out of the 73 students from SCVTHS who competed, 54 received medals including 25 gold. The gold medal winners are now eligible to test their skills at the upcoming, virtually held, SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC) in June. During the National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC), more than 6,000 career and technical education students will showcase their talents and compete in 100 different trade, technical and leadership fields. All contests are run with the help of industry, trade associations, and labor organizations. The test competencies are set by industry.
