I enjoyed a busy but great day May 1. It was made great by a variety of youth groups, Abilene’s four United Supermarket locations and their customers and employees.
If you went to one of those stores between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. that day, you were probably met by Cub Scout, Scouts BSA, Girl Scout or Trail Life/American Heritage Girls members, offering you a flyer and encouraging you to pick up a couple of extra items for Food Bank of West Central Texas.
Boy, did you ever respond! Combined, the four locations brought in 2,649 pounds of food items. In addition, even though it wasn’t requested, customers donated $1,451 for the Food Bank to purchase additional needed items.

Irma, a response to the Hurricane Irma that hit Miami in 2017, sold quickly at the VIP opening. It was priced at $10,000.

AirFest takes to the skies, this week in Abilene
After missing last year due to the pandemic, the annual Big Country AirFest will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Abilene Regional Airport.
The theme will be The Golden Age of Bombers, featuring the B-25 Devil Dog and other vintage and experimental aircraft.
Admission is free, and masks are required. Entry will be at the west gate, with parking available on Runway 4/22. For information, go to bigcountryairfest.org.
Western Heritage
The annual Western Heritage Classic will begin with ranch horse competition at 7 a.m. Thursday at the Taylor County Expo Center, with competitions and trade shows continuing through Saturday.
Live On Stage: Midnight Blue pops up at The Grace
The Eller Hall pop-up dance series will continue at 7 p.m. Friday with a concert by Midnight Blue at The Grace Museum, 102 Cypress St. Tickets are $10.
