Glacier National Park east entrance approved to open for 2021 season

In March 2020, the tribe declared a state of emergency after due to the pandemic. According to a release from the Blackfeet Tribe, the council decided to open the entrance, located on the Blackfeet Reservation, due to the heightened availability of COVID-19 tests and vaccines. The tribe also advanced into Phase 3 of the COVID19 Phased Plan on March 15, 2021 which allows more opening on the Blackfeet Reservation. “With the move to phase 3 as well as consultation with medical authorities and the high rate of vaccination on the Blackfeet Reservation, the Council felt that it was time to allow the east entrance to open,” Blackfeet Tribe’s Public Information Officer James McNeely said in the release.

Blackfeet Nation Council votes to open east Glacier National Park gate

Tribune Staff The Blackfeet Tribal Business Council on Wednesday voted unanimously to open the east entrance to Glacier National Park for the 2021 season. The park s east entrance has been closed to the public since last March to prevent the spread of COVID-19 among Blackfeet tribal members, who are at a greater risk of suffering complications from the virus. Tribal, state and federal officials agreed to close the park s east gate while allowing the public to access the park through other entrances. James McNeely, the tribe s public information officer, said the tribe will work with Glacier National Park and local business owners to ensure members of the community remain safe from COVID-19. 

Fate Of Some East Glacier Businesses Hinges On Reopening Of Park Entrance

A full year into the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses on or near the Blackfeet Indian Reservation are waiting to hear if the east gates of Glacier National Park will reopen.
