Mastercard and Island Pay Launch World’s First Central Bank Digital Currency-Linked Card

Today, Bahamians received even greater flexibility in how they shop and pay using the country’s digital currency, the first of its kind. Under a new program from Mastercard and Island Pay, the Bahamas Sand Dollar prepaid card gives people the option to instantly convert the digital currency to traditional Bahamian dollars and pay for goods and services anywhere Mastercard is accepted on the Islands and around the world.

Throughout a year when the world’s eyes were upon science, the American Association for the Advancement of Science responded to the COVID-19 pandemic that dominated headlines throughout 2020 with evidence-based research, took steps toward systemic change as the national conversation turned to diversity, equity and inclusion, and pursued a wide variety of activities to advance science and serve society. THE NATURE Conservancy (TNC), one of the world’s leading conservation organisations, along with partners, has published detailed maps of important shallow underwater habitats throughout the entire Caribbean, among them all shallow water coral reefs.
“For the first time ever, countries and territories now have a clear picture of the habitats found beneath the waves of the Caribbean. These revolutionary maps will help guide the sustainable use and protection of marine resources for island nations in which 60% of living coral has been lost in the past few decades alone,” said news release from the TNC.
The maps were created by stitching together tens of thousands of high-resolution satellite images, and in some places using aerial fly-over technology, drones, and divers to dig deeper and validate the data.
