Heightened vigil despite drop in new Covid cases | Coimbatore News

(Representative image) COIMBATORE: The decline in daily Covid-19 cases in the district appeared to be slow but steady, even as officials heightened their vigil in the wake of warnings from global and national health agencies not to let down the guard. On Thursday, there were 256 fresh Covid cases in the district. The active cases now stand at 3,453. The district also recorded six Covid deaths on the day. Rural areas continued to report higher transmission than the urban areas of the district. As per the health department’s bulletin, the city corporation areas accounted for 43% of the fresh cases in the past week, while the rural areas logged the remaining 57% cases. Among the rural areas, Karamadai was on top with 11% of the caseload followed by Thudyiyalur. Despite being a congested locality, Pollachi municipality reported a low number of cases, accounting for only 1.24 % of the total cases.

(Representative image) COIMBATORE: The district recorded 270 fresh cases of Covid-19 on Wednesday, taking the total number of cases to 2,25,889. With 414 people getting discharged, the number of active cases was at 3,629. The total number of people cured went up to 2,20,144, taking the recovery rate to 97.4%. The district however recorded eight deaths, the highest count in a week, taking the toll to 2,116. Though daily fresh cases have reduced drastically to 5% of the peak and positivity rate to less than 3%, the health department is continuing to follow all Covid-19 prevention protocol, including earmarking containment zones. At present, the district has 94 containment zones. Of them, 44 are spread across rural areas, including 10 in Sulur, nine in Karamadai, and six in Thudiyalur.

The last date the district recorded no deaths due to the virus was on April 23, when the second wave began recording around 900 cases a day. The death toll over the 80 days has jumped three times from 710 to 2,107. The district recorded 290 fresh cases of Covid-19 on Monday, taking the total number of cases to 2,25,334. With 392 people getting discharged, the number of active cases fell to 3,905. The total number of people recovered rose to 2,19,322, the recovery rate grew further to 97.3%. Though the daily case curve has flattened almost, 292 people continue to be in ICU care and 249 requiring oxygen beds across the district.
