Major political parties of the country – including the ruling PTI, the PML-N, the PPP and the JUI-F – have unveiled lists of their candidates who will take part in the upcoming Senate election schedule for March 3.
The candidates include bigwigs like former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, who was disqualified by the apex court on June 19, 2002 for contempt of court, PPP’s Farhatullah Babar and Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh and Shibli Faraz, the incumbent ministers for finance and information, respectively.
Supreme Court Judge Justice Qazi Faez Isa expressed concerns over releasing of the apex court’s February 11 order barring him from hearing cases related to the premier to media before being shared with him.

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Gulzar Ahmed Monday observed that the Elections (Amendment) Ordinance 2021, envisaging the conduct of Senate elections through open and identifiable ballot was based on assumptions and the apex court would have annulled it had it not been conditional.
This observation came as the five-member larger bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Gulzar Ahmed resumed hearing of the presidential reference.
Justice Mushir Alam, Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Ijazul Ahsan were the other members of the bench. The chief justice observed that promulgation of ordinance was subject to its opinion sought by the federal government through the presidential reference under Advisory Jurisdiction as per Article 186 of the Constitution.

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Gulzar Ahmed remarked on Monday the presidential ordinance for open balloting in the Senate elections had been seemingly issued over speculations, but, he observed, no one could stop the government from issuing ordinances.
The CJP remarked the court would have annulled the presidential ordinance if it was not conditional, adding if the court’s opinion differed from the government’s position, the reference would be abolished. He said the ordinance was subject to judicial opinion.
He made these remarks while hearing the presidential reference seeking the apex court’s opinion on open balloting for the upcoming Senate elections. Five-member larger bench headed by the CJP and including Justice Mushir Alam, Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Yahya Afridi resumed hearing the reference on Monday.
