(WAFF) - The Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering (ASCTE) is ramping up construction of its permanent campus in Cummings Research Park. Students are currently based at Oakwood University until the new state-of-the-art facility is ready in 2022. Right now, 70 students are enrolled in ASCTE but in three years it could be five times that. In fact, by 2024, there could be upwards of 350 to 400 students on the new campus.

It had issued 590 non-residential building permits in 2019 alone including the $1.6 billion Mazda Toyota USA Manufacturing facility, a giant Facebook data center and a $150 million tower addition to regional health care giant Huntsville Hospital. Long-term investments by the federal government on Redstone Arsenal and by aerospace giants in Cummings Research Park had led to major roles for the city in America’s return to the Moon, and new federal tenants such as the FBI were growing fast on the base. The city ended 2020 a finalist to be headquarters home of the country’s new Space Command.

Lockheed Martin has operated in Cummings Research Park for almost 60 years after being recruited to Huntsville by Wernher von Braun while Aerojet Rocketdyne opened its defense headquarters in the park last year as well as its advanced manufacturing facility in North Huntsville Industrial Park. The $5 billion sale will be an all-cash transaction, the announcement said.
