Terry McAteer | Other Voices Since election day in November 2020, nine California county registrars of voters have resigned. This little known fact should send a red flag up every Californian’s flag pole. One of those nine, Kammi Foote, resigned after 14 years as the elections registrar in Inyo County. Kammi is a very good friend of mine, and I can attest that she is a dedicated professional. “I think, if anything, it’s just a sense of being worn down and tired,” Foote said about her decision to leave. “In 2020, we found ourselves working seven days a week, months on end, under tremendous pressure.”

As the registrar of voters for Inyo County, Foote spent 14 years on democracy’s front lines in a job that is equal parts educator and administrator. California gives wide latitude to its 58 counties in how to run elections, and a corps of veteran registrars call the shots across the state. But something has changed. Registrars with decades of experience are calling it quits, stymied by the ever-growing list of election mandates that come without the funding to make them a reality made worse by the personal and professional threats made by voters amped up on partisan rage and destructive conspiracy theories.

California Delays Start of Flavored Tobacco Ban

SACRAMENTO, Calif. The sale of flavored tobacco products in California can continue, for now. The flavor ban which includes menthol cigarettes was set to go into effect on Jan. 1. However, state officials agreed to delay the new law s implementation after opponents to the ban petitioned to bring the issue of the voters. According to The Associated Press, the offices of Secretary of State Alex Padilla and state Attorney General Xavier Becerra won t enforce the legislation until county clerks have enough time to verify that there are at least 623,000 valid signatures. On Nov. 24, the California Coalition for Fairness said it submitted more than 1 million signatures from registered voters in a bid to get a veto referendum to overturn the legislation, SB 793, onto the November 2022 ballot, as
