Wooster developers look to bring more affordable housing to city

WOOSTER A group of community-minded people are looking to make a difference in the city by bringing affordable housing to the area. Chad Boreman, Justin Starlin and Tom White, along with several silent partners, would achieve the goal by investing in dilapidated houses and vacant lots. Investors are testing the model by constructing a single home in the 500 block of Larwill Street to see how the housing market responds. The development group is not expecting the plan, in the early stages, to be a profitable venture, Boreman said. It s more of an experiment to see what can we do and how will this impact the community, he explained.

Wooster mayor: COVID numbers in control; hoping 2021 brings normalcy

“We are hoping to get life back to normal by the end of spring and early summer,” he said. He praised city employees who “worked tirelessly” and whose quality of services never waivered so that life could continue as normally as possible under such trying circumstances, and said the city will look to rebuild in 2021. Also Monday, the mayor recommended Gary Thompson be approved for another four-year term on the Wooster Community Hospital Board of Governors. Breneman lauded Thompson as a “true believer in our city, and has given back tenfold on the amount of time he has served in our ranks.” The mayor noted there is still one other open seat on the board, and he said he would have another person to put forward before the next hospital board meeting on Jan. 27.

Ashland comes off purple watchlist, Wayne & Holmes remain red

ASHLAND The Ohio Public Health Advisory System dropped Ashland County from its Level 4 watch list on Thursday. The county went on the watch list last week after it met six of the seven indicators for at least one week. If a county meets six of the seven indicators for two consecutive weeks, it has reached a Level 4 public emergency and colored purple on the map. Currently, Ashland County is meeting five of the seven indicators including an 80% capacity of ICU beds in its hospitals. At least 20% of those beds are filled with COVID-19 patients. It no longer meets the indicator showing a sustained increase in emergency department visits over five days, which put it on the watch list last week.
