Former Fayetteville city council member Robert Massey dies at 72

Massey, 72, died Feb. 5. City Councilman D.J. Haire said Massey supported fairness in the workplace. Massey wanted city government to reflect Fayetteville s place as a melting pot of diversity, Haire said. Charles Evans, chairman of the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners, said that when Massey said something people knew they could take it to the bank. Massey wanted to help people, Evans said. He was a trooper when it came to people that aren t as fortunate as others, Evans said. Massey served on the City Council from 1992 to 2014. During that time, he helped revitalize downtown, improve drinking water in western Fayetteville, and expand the city s transit system, according to a 2013 Fayetteville Observer article.

Cooper visits Cumberland County COVID-19 vaccination site

This week, the state moved toward receiving the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine, as the two-dose vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer are already being distributed statewide. State Health Director Dr. Mandy Cohen, who received the Johnson & Johnson shot in Wake County before Friday’s visit to Fayetteville, said healthcare workers, residents 65 and older and front-line essential workers are eligible for vaccination. Charles Evans, chairman of the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners, said he wants to ensure more Black and Hispanic residents are among those in line. Evans cited data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that shows Black and Hispanic people are three times more likely to contract the virus than white people. The data also shows that in the past month, only 16% of the state’s Black residents have received the vaccine; about 22% of the state’s total population is Black and 10% is Hispanic.
