The Jamaican Government is providing direct financial support of over $40 million to the country’s athletes as they prepare for the Tokyo Olympics and the Paralympic Games.
So far, some $16 million in monthly payments has been made to 87 athletes under the Athletes Assistance Programme through the Institute of Sports (INSPORT).
The disclosure was made by Sport Minister Olivia Grange on Tuesday as she made her contribution to the 2021/2022 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives.
“We saw the toll of these challenging times on our athletes and sought to support them to get them in the best frame of mind as they prepare for upcoming competitions. We worked closely with Optimisation Hub, which operates out of Australia, and with local mental health specialists to develop a mental health programme for athletes, coaches, and their support teams,” Grange told the House.
