Bill Gates, Climate Warrior – and Super Emitter

Bill Gates, Climate Warrior – and Super Emitter Details Bill Gates has a new book out: How to Avoid a Climate Disaster. But some people are less than amused at having to take lessons on the climate crisis from a billionaire who, in the words of the ETC Group, “made a fortune skirting government regulations with monopolistic practices, and holds a significant financial stake in the continued expansion of the fossil fuel industry.”   The following article by Tim Schwab makes clear just how extensive those fossil fuel investments are and how much they are at odds with Bill Gates’ claims. But at the same time as holding significant financial interests in fossil fuel extraction and fossil fuel dependent industries, quite apart from having a massive personal carbon footprint, Gates is also embracing large-scale planetary interventions via risky geoengineering.

ENGA pushes for non-GMO food labelling across Europe

The newly founded European Non-GMO Industry Association (ENGA) is backing the expansion of genetically modified-free production across the bloc and supporting Member States looking to promote non-GMO labelling, says co-founder Alexander Hissting. A new members association representing the non-GMO food sector has set up shop in Brussels. The European Non-GMO Industry Association (ENGA) was founded by the German Association for Food without Genetic Engineering (VLOG) and the Austrian Platform for GMO-free Food Production (ARGE Gentechnik-frei). VLOG was established in 2010 to advocate for non-GMO food labelling, and in doing so, encourage greater GMO transparency on-pack. While VLOG’s non-GMO seal, called ‘Ohne GenTechnik’ in German, is ‘well established’ across its homeland, VLOG managing director Alexander Hissting saw potential for greater harmonisation across the bloc, he explained.

Paranoia and Public Opinion

This article was first published by chinadialogue. When permits for Chinese researchers to grow genetically modified rice and corn expired this summer, there was concern. More so, given there was little indication that the Ministry of Agriculture would renew them. The certificates, issued in 2009, concerned two types of Bt rice, which express a gene of the bacillus thuringiensis bacterium, conferring pest resistance, and phytase maize, which when used as feed can increase the uptake of phosphorus in pigs and chickens. This in turn can lead to energy savings and more efficient land use. Though not the only homegrown transgenic crops, these projects had attracted particular attention both for their potential to produce path-breaking examples of Chinese “indigenous innovation” and for the perceived risks of altering such culturally resonant staple crops.
