Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Australia will obtain nuclear submarines for the first time under a new defence alliance with the United States and the United Kingdom. It will not include weapons or a civil nuclear industry.
The historic new defence agreement was a proposal 18 months in the making. It would result in what the US has described as “biggest strategic step Australia has taken in generations”.
Defence insists it is committed to buying submarines from the French but has confirmed it is looking at alternatives in case the $90 billion deal falls over.
