Groton When Rashaad Carter was growing up in Poquonnock Bridge, a police officer used to drive around and stop every chance he could to play football or shoot hoops with the neighborhood kids.
The officer made an impression on Carter and his twin brother, Raheem, and piqued their interest in law enforcement.
“My brother and I always respected that and wanted to represent the profession in that light,” Carter said. “I’ve always looked at law enforcement as a helping profession that serves the community.”
But as a kid, Carter remembers not seeing a lot of Black people in law enforcement, and he said he wanted to become a state trooper to change that.

GUILFORD Shoreline Arts Alliance is presenting the 20th annual New Voices in Children’s Literature: Tassy Walden Awards competition.
This contest provides unpublished Connecticut authors and illustrators of children’s books the opportunity to have manuscripts and portfolios reviewed by literary agents and possibly by editors and art directors at some of the major publishing houses for children’s literature, according to a statement.
The contest is a Connecticut statewide, juried competition opened to Children’s Literature writers and illustrators who are not published or under contract for publication. Categories are: Picture Book (text only), Illustrated Picture Book (author and illustrator must be same person), Children’s Book Illustrator Portfolio, Middle Grade Novel
New Social Work-DCF Partnership Prepares Students to Work With Latino Families
The School of Social Work has launched a new track for Spanish-speaking Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) students, which prepares them to work with Latino families in child welfare and protection.
