President Biden has tapped Miguel Cardona to lead the Education Department, and he ll soon have the chance to make his case for the job before the Senate during a confirmation hearing.
If confirmed, Cardona will step into the hot seat after Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, who was the bitter target of Democratic scorn for her changes to Title IX, her support of school choice and charter programs, and for changes to Obama-era student loan borrowing policies.

With this, Miguel Cardona, Joe Biden s Education Secretary pick becomes the prime candidate to succeed DeVos. Cardona is an American educator and has served as the Connecticut Commissioner of education since 2019.
Starting off his career as a fourth-grade teacher at the Israel Putnam Elementary School, Cardona climbed the rungs steadily as he became the youngest principal in the state for Hanover school at the age of 27 in 2003. The years 2015-19 saw him essay the role of Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning in his hometown of Meriden, Connecticut. One of the highlights in his career was his relentless focus on making sure the gaps were closed between English learners and their peers.
