Turkey will soon hold a tender for a huge canal on the edge of Istanbul and lay the groundwork for it in the summer, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday, advancing a project which has drawn criticism over its cost and environmental impact.
Speaking to lawmakers from his ruling AK Party, Erdogan said Turkey would push on with the plan “whether you like it or not”, referring to criticism from opposition parties and other opponents, and added the canal would be a “new windpipe” for the region, Reuters reported.
The government says it will ease traffic on the Bosphorus Strait and prevent accidents, but critics have said it will wreak environmental havoc and pollute fresh water resources. Turkey approved development plans for the project last month.

Turkey detains 10 retired admirals over maritime treaty declarationInternational 2021-04-06, by Editor Comments Off 0
Turkey on April 5 detained 10 retired admirals for signing a statement in support of the 1936 Montreux Convention, accusing them of conspiring against the constitutional order.
The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office said that arrest warrants had been issued for 10 suspects and ordered four other suspects to report to Ankara police within three days, opting not to detain them because of their age.
The prosecutor’s office opened a probe on April 4 into the retired admirals on suspicion of an “agreement to commit a crime against the state’s security and constitutional order.”
ANKARA: Turkey’s latest arrest wave targeting former admirals who signed a critical night-time declaration has stirred debate over whether the crackdown is a result of the country’s “Eurasianist shift.”
On Monday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused 104 former navy commanders of trying to stage a “political coup” through an open letter that criticized the government’s new 45 kilometer-long artificial waterway, dubbed Kanal Istanbul, and its immediate impact on the 1936 Montreux Convention that regulates the traffic of warships in the Istanbul strait.
Among the signatories, the most notable name was Cem Gurdeniz, the mastermind of Turkey’s controversial maximalist maritime doctrine, known as Blue Homeland.
