A federal bill passed by Parliament in June and proclaimed into law on Tuesday, removed the prohibition on single game betting. The prohibition had been on the books for decades for every sport but horse racing to prevent match-fixing. Requiring someone to place a parlay bet on multiple games at the same time in theory made it harder to fix games, but the internet has enabled a multimillion-dollar grey market.
