The fight for abortion access in New Brunswick has been a long one. But advocates just scored a big win: for the second time, the federal government is cutting funds to the province as retaliation for their treatment of abortion.
Health Canada announced last week that it would withhold $140,216 in health transfers from New Brunswick. The reason, they stated explicitly, was because the province refused to cover the cost of abortions outside of hospitals, forcing those patients to to pay out-of-pocket for termination. An abortion can cost up to $850.

The following are brief reports of items discussed during a Feb. 24 online meeting of Haliburton County council.
Council passed a resolution providing support in principle for the activities of the Haliburton-CKL Long-Term Care Coalition, receiving a presentation from co-chairs Bonnie Roe and Mike Perry.
While the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the shortcomings of the long-term care system, Roe told councillors the system has been broken for decades.
“COVID-19 has shone a light on this crisis due to the horrific deaths, but we can’t kid ourselves, that this has been happening for decades, several decades,” Roe said of the circumstances in which residents of long-term care facilities live.

Medavie Blue Cross and Medical Confidence, recently acquired by CloudMD, are providing select plan members on disability with access to a personalized health-care navigation service that aims to reduce wait times to see a specialist.
According to a press release, the MedExcellence program will align with the Canada Health Act and provincial health-care systems to get Canadians on disability, who are awaiting an appointment, earlier access to a specialist for their condition. “The ever-increasing wait times have become the norm, made worse by COVID-19’s impact on our health-care system,” said Angela Johnson, Medical Confidence’s president, in the release. “Through our platform . . . we will provide Medavie plan members a customized . . . approach to obtaining the right treatment at the right time.”

Haliburton County council voted to support the declaration made by the Haliburton-City of Kawartha Lakes Long-Term Care Coalition, but with a catch.
Earlier this month, the coalition’s 50 members passed a declaration with six measures that Co-Chair Bonnie Roe said would improve long-term care in Ontario. The declarations are: amend the Canada Health Act to include long-term care, ensure all residents get at least four hours of direct care per day, reinstate inspections of homes and better consistency in enforcement, change the culture of long-term care to show more respect for our elders, and take profits out of long-term care.
