Scholarship Fund Honors CCHS Teacher Killed in North Park, Mario Fierro – NBC 7 San Diego

According to the Diocese of San Diego, Fierro was deeply rooted in the Catholic school system in San Diego. He graduated from University High School in 2002, the predecessor to CCHS. Fierro returned to CCHS in 2016 – but this time, as a social science teacher. Fierro also helped coach the CCHS football team and served as the athletic director at Notre Dame Academy, a feeder school to CCHS, the Diocese of San Diego said. Fierro was beloved by his students and players. “He really inspired me and that’s part of the reason I wanted to be a history major in college,” one of Fierro’s students told NBC 7 earlier this week. “He definitely taught me some of the most valuable things I know as a teacher and a mentor, and I will be forever grateful.”

San Diegans react to violent U S Capitol takeover

Print San Diego community leaders reacted with a mix of horror and various degrees of outrage following a violent takeover of the U.S. Capitol by a mob bent on thwarting the peaceful transfer of power Wednesday. Many local Democrats and Republicans alike condemned the violence. However, partisanship tended to show when it came to where to place the blame. And while the scenes that unfolded on televisions and social media feeds were shocking, some said this was a moment they had long anticipated. Here’s what some San Diegans had to say: “What we saw today in Washington was an assault on our democracy emboldened by the President of the United States. The violent actions of these extremists were infuriating and must be condemned by every American who believes in our Constitution and the rule of law.”

Christmas Mass Celebrated Outdoors Due to Pandemic

The latest mass is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. to abide by state order. The first mass started at noon, and the windy and gloomy weather made for a chilly start to Christmas mass celebrations. Some parishioners were bundled up in jackets, scarves and beanies to keep warm. Parishioners also tried to tune out noises coming from busy downtown streets, like sirens blaring, drivers playing loud music and the sound of traffic. But, Robell said, the distractions don t take away from the focus of the Christmas celebration.    “It’s just a privilege to be here, a local parishioner said. It’s Christ’s birthday, and that’s the most important thing.”
