KMC’s parks department pruning trees before monsoon rainfalls

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s (KMC) parks and horticulture department has started trimming and pruning work of old trees and sapling plantation on roads and arteries before the monsoon season hits the city.
The branches of the trees should be trimmed so that they do not obstruct the traffic, KMC Administrator Laeeq Ahmed Khan directed the parks department. According to a statement issued by the KMC, the staff of the parks and horticulture department was working at Sharae Faisal, Kidney Hill Park, Aziz Bhatti Park, Shaheed Millat Road, University Road and other places. Civil society and various welfare organisations, including Faizan Global Relief Foundation, NED University of Engineering and Technology and Rotary International, were also assisting the KMC in this regard.

The neurons in our brains and bodies do amazing things: sense the outside world, transmit information, guide our behavior. But they don’t do it alone.
Using tiny worms with well-mapped nervous systems, scientists at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center answered a longstanding question about the role of accessory brain cells called glial cells in supporting neuron function. Their study was published recently in the journal eLife.

The reversal in coffee price trend has left growers worried in key producing states such as Karnataka and Kerala as they complete the harvest and gear up to start operations such as pruning and manuring for the next season.
Farm gate coffee prices in Karnataka have dropped by 6-7 per cent over the past four months, even as global prices have turned volatile during this period. Arabica May 21 futures on ICE have risen to 132 cents per pound last week, from about 128 cents in early April. Similarly, Robusta May 21 futures on LIFFE are hovering around $1,365 a tonne, up from $1,350 in early April.
