Major Recall For Neutrogena & Aveeno Sunscreens Johnson & Johnson along with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration has issued a recall for several Neutrogena and one Aveeno brand sunscreens which have been identified to contain benzene, which is a known cancer causing agent and has been linked to cases of leukemia. According to the recall, all five of the products are aerosol sunscreens. Neutrogena Beach Defense aerosol sunscreen, Neutrogena Cool Dry Sport aerosol sunscreen, Neutrogena Invisible Daily defense aerosol sunscreen, Neutrogena Ultra Sheer aerosol sunscreen, and Aveeno Protect + Refresh aerosol sunscreen. All of these products have been distributed nationwide at multiple retailers.

Per the company, five aerosol sunscreens from Neutrogena and Aveeno were recalled “out of an abundance of caution” after trace amounts of Benzene were found in some samples. They are the following:

Johnson & Johnson Recalls Neutrogena + Aveeno Sunscreen Just in time for the summer beach season:  Johnson & Johnson Consumer Inc. has issued a voluntary recall that covers all lots of five Neutrogena and Aveeno aerosol sunscreen products.  The concern is with low levels of benzene that have been identified in some sampling of the products. While there have been no adverse reactions to the products at the present time - and, while the levels of benzene present in the sampling is low , Johnson & Johnson is recalling the sunscreens due to the fact that the chemical has been classified as a human carcinogen - a substance that could potentially cause cancer depending on the level and extent of the exposure .

On Wednesday, July 14, the company reported that low levels of benzene were found in the following products: NEUTROGENA® Beach Defense® aerosol sunscreen, NEUTROGENA® Cool Dry Sport aerosol sunscreen, NEUTROGENA® Invisible Daily™ defense aerosol sunscreen, NEUTROGENA® Ultra Sheer® aerosol sunscreen, and AVEENO® Protect + Refresh aerosol sunscreen J&J said benzene isn t an ingredient in any of the products, and it is investigating the cause.  Anyone using these products should stop and discard them, the company said. Consumers can also contact the consumer care center with questions or to request a refund at 1-800-458-1673.
