Columns share an author’s personal perspective. So my newfound love for vinyl has allowed many new and interesting conversations with friends, readers and fellow music lovers. I’ve been on a quest to acquire albums from my youth, on vinyl. What I wouldn’t give to have some of those from the ’80s I used to have. Who knew vinyl would come back like this?Over the weekend, I encountered a music store with a lot of used albums, many in pristine condition. It was fun

What we experienced in the U.S. this past week is upsetting on a number of levels. So as I ve done before, here s some music to try help us cope and make sense of things.
David Bowie, This Is Not America
I can t think of any better way to start than with this track from David Bowie and guitarist Pat Metheny. It s from the 1985 film
The Falcon and the Snowman.

In 1985, Tears For Fears released a powerful song that could be interpreted as a song about a love gone bad, but a closer listen reveals a meditation on those who are desperate for power and control.
Well I’d be loathe to call 2020 a great year, because it was genuinely horrible, but at least it was enlivened by some fantastic music. The tragedy is that, in a year that afforded artists the freedom to write and record at their leisure, the very industry upon which their art relies (concerts, tours, festivals and dance floors) ground to a halt. Legendary venues, bars and nightclubs have closed across the globe and a host of promising musicians, have had to return to their day jobs (presuming that they still exist).
So while it is worth celebrating the outpouring of creativity that the Covid-19 pandemic unleashed, the incredible cost in lives and mental well being should not be forgotten – and nor should the cost to the music industry at large. 2020 might end up being a great year for Spotify and Apple Music, but a terrible one for the flesh and blood musicians behind the algorithms.

Peter Durward Harris (5 out of 5 stars) The first volume of A very special Christmas was incredible, but this follow-up is just as good and even more eclectic. Now, I have wide musical tastes but I can t believe there are too many people who enjoy listening to Randy Travis (singing Jingle bell rock here) and also enjoy the music of Run DMC (rapping Christmas is). Country and rap just do not mix, even though the Bellamy brothers once recorded a song called Country rap - it was a good try but didn t really work. And even if you are in the minority that enjoy both Randy Travis and Run DMC, will you also enjoy Michael Bolton, Debbie Gibson and everything else here? Probably not. In my case, I can tolerate one rap track for the sheer brilliance and diversity of the rest of this collection.Tom Petty sets the standard with the openi
