The Daily Herald - Winter storm wallops Northeast, but some schools bury snow days

Winter storm wallops Northeast, but some schools bury snow days Hits: 646 NEW YORK A winter storm marched up the U.S. East Coast on Wednesday, delivering a disruptive blow to transportation systems and a welcome day off for some school kids, but not for many who have been learning remotely during the pandemic. By midafternoon, the Nor easter had brought a wintry mix to Washington and wind-whipped snow to New York City, parts of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania as it threatened a swath of the country that is home to more than 50 million people. The sprawling system could dump up to 2 feet (60 cm) of snow in an area stretching from eastern Pennsylvania to New York s Catskill Mountains, with lesser amounts of a foot (30 cm) or more in the rest of the Northeast, forecasters said. Parts of Virginia and North Carolina will be blanketed with a thin later of ice while areas in the Mid-Atlantic region closer to the coast will get only rain before the storm move

WV School Superintendent Tells Kids Go Build a Snowman

(Joe Ahlquist/The Rochester Post-Bulletin via AP) A ray of hope in the gloom of 2020 as a West Virginia school superintendent reminds us of what’s really important in life something that can’t be taken away by lockdowns and autocratic politicians. Jefferson County Schools Superintendent Bondy Shay Gibson wrote in a letter to teachers, school staff, students, and parents on Tuesday that school would be closed for the day. Even though classes were virtual and almost the entire staff worked from home, Ms. Gibson thought everyone needed the break. The letter went viral, now with 63 thousand shares on Facebook.

Winter storm prompts closures, cancellations

The Northern Shenandoah Valley saw its first major snowstorm of the season Wednesday, with snow beginning about mid-morning and continuing as a wintry mix of snow and sleet throughout the day. The region was expected to see about a foot of snow with 14 to 15 inches at higher elevations and snow tapering off about midnight. Around the area, town and county offices in Clarke, Frederick, Shenandoah and Warren counties and the city of Winchester closed for the day. Area schools were also closed on Wednesday, opting to take the snow day rather than holding virtual classes. On Wednesday afternoon, Shenandoah County Public Schools announced a snow day for today. Students will then have virtual classes as usual on Friday as well as Monday and Tuesday before beginning winter break.

Another 2020 casualty: the snow day

BUFFALO, N.Y. Even before the first flakes fell, New York City s first big snowfall of the season was doomed to be a gloomy disappointment for more than a million of its schoolchildren. COVID-19 has robbed a lot from children in 2020, and in many school districts in northern climes it is now stealing the magic of the snow day waking up to find that school has been canceled and the day will be filled with snowballs and snow angels. Mayor Bill de Blasio made it clear as the city began preparing for the storm that rolled through the region Wednesday and Thursday that students there including ones still attending classes in person would have to log in and work as usual.
