March 14, 2021 Adam Maida / Bettmann / Getty / The Atlantic Last month, a public-school district that serves mostly elementary and middle-school students in Evanston, Illinois, held its third annual Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action using a curriculum, created in collaboration with Black Lives Matter activists and the local teachers’ union, that introduces children as young as 4 and 5 to some of America’s most complex and controversial subjects. For example, parents of kindergartners in District 65 were asked to spend time at home discussing a book on race that teachers had read aloud to their children.

District 65 tries again with budget cut survey

Irina Strelnikova/Shutterstock After stopping a community survey in its tracks last month “to re-evaluate for clarity and use of an equity lens,” as Superintendent Devon Horton said, the financially strapped Evanston/Skokie School District is once again asking for public input on future budget cuts. But this latest survey is different in several ways than the one which was “paused.” First of all, the new survey is in part a “School Finance 101” tutorial, with information about how the district gets its money, and questions about how aware survey respondents are of those sources.
