An activist arrested on Tuesday over a poster of President Uhuru Kenyatta widely circulated online will today know how long he will continue to be in custody as police prepare charges against him.
Senior Resident Magistrate Jane Kamau yesterday ordered police to detain Edwin Mutemi Kiama at Central Police Station and present him in court today for the ruling.
Police had sought to detain the suspect for 14 days as they complete their investigations, but this was opposed by Kiama s lawyers Haroun Ndubi and Martha Karua.

A Nairobi court has released anti-IMF loan crusader Mutemi Kiama on cash bail.
Milimani Senior Resident Magistrate Jane Kamau declined a request by the prosecutor to remand the activist for 14 days saying there are no compelling reasons to warrant his detention.
Mr Kiama was granted Sh500,000 cash bail.
He is accused of being behind a poster circulating on social media indicating that President Uhuru Kenyatta is not authorised to act or transact on behalf of Kenyans.
“Owing to the complexity and nature of the cases, we require up to 14 days to enable us to carry out comprehensive and in-depth investigations,” read part of the affidavit signed by DCI officer Patrick Kibowen.
In an affidavit filed before the court, officer Kibowen said he is investigating a case of suspected contravention of several provisions of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act which include false publication contrary to section 22(1) as read with section 22(2) (b) thereof.
According to the investigating officer suspected offences allegedly occurred on different occasions between April 5 and 6, 2021 by way of publication on social media.
The DCI officer further noted that twitter handles Mwarimu wa Kiama @ MutemiWaKiama and Wanjiku Revolution @WanjikuRevolt on which the suspected criminal publication was made is linked to the activist.
