The Lawmakers Who Will Make or Break Biden s Infrastructure Plan

Democrats will transform Biden plan into legislation Republicans call for smaller proposal but may have little sway April 8, 2021 6:02 AM By Lillianna Byington and Kaustuv Basu President Joe Biden proposed a $2.25 trillion infrastructure package that aims to tackle some of the major goals he campaigned on: revamping transportation, creating jobs, and fighting climate change. “These are investments we have to make,” Biden said in a speech debuting his plan. “We can afford to make them — or, put another way, we can’t afford not to.” Turning the plan into law, however, is not possible without Congress — particularly a handful of lawmakers with outsize influence on the process. Democratic leaders are moving quickly to draft infrastructure proposals to match the goals the president laid out, while Republicans are attempting to make their voices heard on a bill that may not need their votes.

Celebrate your library during National Library Week

Submitted Content Apr 9, 2021 National Library Week, taking place April 4-10, celebrates the role of the library as an institution in communities, not just as a place for books as it’s traditionally thought of, but as a center for enriching the lives of community members. Welcome to Your Library National Library Week’s theme of “Welcome to Your Library” fits not just new library users, but even those who may already have experience with the library and could use a chance to get reacquainted, as some things are a little different. The 12 Pioneer Library System library branches in 10 communities serve a population of nearly 400,000 residents. The system’s total shared collection consists of hundreds of thousands of materials open to any PLS cardholder.

CALmatters Commentary: Time to invest in state s libraries

CALmatters Commentary: Time to invest in state’s libraries By Greg Lucas and Patty Wong California’s libraries are the hearts of their communities. That’s one reason 23 million Californians have library cards. But many of California’s libraries are 40 years of age or older, and like everything from power grids to two-lane highways, libraries eventually need to be repaired, renovated or replaced. Old wiring. Lousy plumbing. Nonexistent or antiquated fire alarm or sprinkler systems. Restrooms that don’t work for Americans with disabilities. Despite the great love Californians have for our libraries, these conditions exist in far more communities than they should.
