Opinions expressed in this article are his own. Songwriter Stephen Foster s antebellum ballad My Old Kentucky Home, the state song of Kentucky, has been sung by crowds at the Kentucky Derby almost every year since 1936. Last year, because of pandemic crowd restrictions and protests of the song s racism, track bugler Steve Buttleman intoned the melody in a somber performance shorn of the controversial words. According to Churchill Downs Darren Rogers, a moment of silence preceded the performance to recognize the inequities that many in our nation still face, and encourage renewed hope. In an effort t

Republican leaders have been anxiously watching their popularity slide as America becomes blacker and browner. Georgia and Virginia, for example, are no longer reliably red states. And Gallup this month concluded that only 25 percent of voters self-identify as Republican (another 15 percent are “leaners”), the party’s worst showing since 2012 and sharply down since November.

Why America Should Focus on Domestic, Not Foreign, Problems

Why America Should Focus on Domestic, Not Foreign, Problems America’s strategic distraction has favored addressing foreign threats and those domestically with a foreign aspect, leaving a wide space for domestic extremism to go unchecked. Florida Opposes Riots, Encourages Vehicle Homicide April 22, 2021 2:14 PM Bill Wineke, Special to Channel 3000 Posted: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is proud of the legislation he just signed making riots illegal. Not that riots weren’t illegal before, you understand, it’s just that in Florida now they are truly illegal. Among other things, the legislation gives immunity to drivers who strike rioters who block a street or highway. And it defines a “riot” as three or more persons who assist each other in violent or disorderly conduct leading to injury or property damage or the threat of property damage. Similar bills are being introduced by Republicans in state legislators all over the country.
